Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
