Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
