The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
