The UK and US have agreed to a important trade agreement that will maintain zero tariffs on UK drug shipments going into the American market.

Agreement Details of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to boost expenditure on drugs through the public health system. This commitment guarantees that tariffs on these crucial products will stay at zero for a timeframe of the next three years.

This agreement is in response to earlier statements to dramatically increase duties on branded drug products, with figures mentioned as high as double the cost.

"This deal between the UK reinforces the global environment for new treatments and establishes much-needed equity to American-British medicine commerce," an announcement noted.

Economic Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the the United Kingdom's biggest exports to the United States, which is clearly the primary buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures indicate that in the year prior to last September, the UK sold medicines worth billions to the US. This figure made up nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that span.

"This deal secures jobs, stimulates investment and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a global hub for medical research," the Business and Trade Secretary commented.

Detailed UK Commitments

The pact involves several key commitments from the UK:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the cost ceiling at which it considers new medicines to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to raise total public funding on drugs from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum drug companies must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. Last year, refunds topped twenty percent.

Industry Background

This agreement follows a protracted row between the sector and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

These tensions were heightened by arguments that US consumers were paying several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several large drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while substantial expansions have been directed toward American operations.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a percentage of its resources over the past decade.
