Wolff Set to Sell Shareholding Pricing Mercedes F1 at £4.6bn

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Growth

The deal signifies a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the expansion in market values of F1 teams in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
